The IRS is pleased to share a demonstration of how manufacturers can register with the IRS, apply to become a qualified manufacturer and obtain a Qualified Manufacturer ID, or QMID, for Energy Efficiency Home Improvement Credits.
Beginning in 2025, manufacturers of energy efficient home improvement products must register for an online Clean Energy Business Account and submit a Qualified Manufacturer Registration and Agreement application for their products to qualify for the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit.
Here is a quick tutorial on how to become a qualified manufacturer.
The first step is to register your business.
Start by creating an ID.me account.
ID.me is an official identity verification and sign-in service.
Now you can login to IRS Energy Credits Online.
Once logged in, you will see the IRS Clean Energy Dashboard.
Select Get Started from the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Product Manufacturers tile.
Then select Apply to be a Qualified Manufacturer.
Now you will confirm your Clean Energy Business Account information.
Next, click the appropriate Eligible Products checkboxes to indicate the products you manufacture that are eligible for an Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit in Tax Year 2024 or 2025.
Note: If you manufacture windows, skylights, doors or heat pumps you will need to define geographic zones.
For example, if you manufacture windows that qualify in different zones, then select all three product category zones.
Next you will need to upload proof of product manufacturing.
First input your website’s URL.
Then upload at least one document as proof that you manufacture one or more of the products you previously selected.
This proof can be marketing materials, product certification documents, compliance statements, or technical specifications.
You can drag and drop the file or click Select Files to Upload.
The file types accepted for proof are PDF, PNG, and JPG - and each file size cannot exceed 10 megabytes.
Next, read and agree to the terms in the attestation.
Click Submit and your application will be reviewed.
Once your application is submitted, you can check its status.
If additional information is needed to complete the validation process, you will see a banner asking you to contact the IRS through the Secure Messaging application in the Clean Energy Dashboard.
Click Connect with us using Secure Messaging button.
Include your Case ID, which can be found in the banner warning, in your message subject line and the body of the message.
Please use secure messaging for any questions you have.
If your application is rejected, you will need to submit a new agreement.
Before starting a new agreement application, we recommend contacting IRS through Secure Messaging to gather additional information and clarify any issues that caused your application to be rejected.
If your application is tentatively approved, you will need to establish a QMID, which consumers will use to claim Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit on their federal income tax return for tax year 2025.
For tax years 2026 to 2032, taxpayers will need a 17-character Product Identification Number to claim the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit on their federal income tax returns.
Once logged into the ECO tool, you will see a unique 4-digit code.
Click Accept to establish that code as your QMID.
If you wish to have a new code generated, click Regenerate Code to request five new codes.
You will then select one of the five randomly provided codes.
You can only regenerate codes once.
Once you have selected a 4-digit code for your QMID, click the Accept button.
You have successfully established your QMID!
For future reference, you can access your QMID by selecting the Profile button in the navigation bar on IRS.gov.
